Bronze-tinted Victory

Bronze-tinted Victory

In the bronze medal match Phoenix and DYSSh Volna, who left their qualifying groups, but lost the semifinals with the equal score (3:7), just wanted to get over and done with the match as quickly as possible. In the first half Phoenix carried the play, and the coaching staff in the person of Olexandr Kuzmenko and Kostyantyn Tatarenko chose to play defense first. And before the break, this bet triggered, since Oleh Ahafonov managed to keep the gate locked. By the way, the keeper of the opposition became one of the main characters of the previous match. No matter how hard our guys tried to hit the target, they were not able to do this in the first 20 minutes. Volna, though, managed to use one of its few chances. Skipper Kostyantyn Zaika gave an accurate pass to Andrii Sidorenko, who scored a spectacular goal: the ball, hitting the crossbar, ended up in Eldar Bratchuk's net.

Taking the lead, Phoenix's rivals again 'closed' down in their half of the pitch, and dangerous moments occurred from time to time at Oleh Ahafonov's goalmouth. The boys firmly adhered to the chosen tactics. They retained the possession of the ball much of the time, trying to find gaps in the opponent’s defense. So, if in the first half the audience saw only one goal scored, in the next 20-minutes the teams managed to score three times.

At first, Phoenix fans had an excellent reason to rejoice, as already in the debut of the half-time the score became equal. Ivan Konkov’s flank raid ended with a cross, and Danylo Boldyzhev came first to the ball, volleying it right into the top corner of the goal - with no chance for the opponent's goalie.

Closer to the middle of the second half, Phoenix made a spectacular combination in three moves, taking the lead. Ivan Konkov, having beaten the opponent, passed to Mykhailo Soldatenko, who gave an assist to Maksym Dolhulia. In this situation, Volna coaching staff needed to take urgent measures. So, the 5-a-side tactics turned out to be successful: the whites managed to use their numerical majority, and after a cross Ivan Konkov deflected the ball into his own net.

Then the run-and-gun game followed, and one could see that the rivals were not willing to bring the matter to a series of 6-meter kicks. In the final stage of the match, Phoenix players were closer to success than the opposition, but Volna stood out, and the outcome of the confrontation was to be decided in the post-match 'lottery'.

In this game of nerves, success was on the side of our guys. Two kicks from the 6-meter mark were saved by Volodymyr Lazeba, and his Volna counterpart, Oleh Ahafonov, failed to pocket a chance, shooting past the gate. Danylo Khodatskyi, Mykhailo Soldatenko and Artem Shevchenko did manage to convert their opportunities, and Danylo Boldyzhev with a decisive shot brought victory to his team, and the bronze medals of the tournament.

Both teams were relieved to see the end of a clearly dragged out tournament. Phoenix, which has been working in the hall for a month now and even won the first indoor tournament of the season, has looked baffled on the synthetic turf for the last few games. Volna, in fact, became the main hero of the final day. Olexandr Kuzmenko and Kostyantyn Tatarenko's team finished the Cup with huge staffing issues, having only two players on the bench. Despite the slurred final, let's say thanks to the boys for the tournament. The team looked rather good at the group stage, and the semifinal was the only match they had lost in this tournament. Ahead of the guys in five days is the Futsal Open Children Cup 'Olympia', to be held in Dnipro on October 31 - November 1, and in less than a month Phoenix will start in the Ukrainian Championship.
